Domestic violence is much more than physical abuse; it can be verbal, spiritual, technological, emotional. According to the NCADV (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence) it's the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another. It includes physical violence, sexual violence, threats, and emotional abuse. The frequency and severity of domestic violence can vary dramatically. However, DV isn't exclusive to romantic relationships; it can be friends, family, or even co workers. It's extremely damaging to the black community which can be seen in the stat pdf below:
The LGBTQIA+ community is also deeply affected, you can find rising stats here. This is as far as we know, think about how many go unreported! Now imagine being black and queer? Or Latinx and queer? Or being a woman and all of those things. Intersectionality is why we are under cared for and overlooked. To find BIPOC lived experience led organizations click here. Lastly, the Power and Control Wheel diagram shows the tactics abusive partners use to keep survivors in relationships. They start subtly, then overtime become more damaging and violent.
Domestic violence and abusive behavior can happen to anyone regardless of gender and sexuality. So, although most of this is Black woman centered, it can be helpful to anyone of the QBIPOC/BIPOC communities and save a life!
